First Blog Assignment

Why did you sign up for a roots music FYS section?
-It was actually the fourth one on my list, but the other ones did not fit into my schedule.

If you could take 5 pieces of music with you to a desert isle, what would they be?
-Umm... I don't really know. I don't think I could pick just five. Can I just bring my laptop with me? Maybe some Arcade Fire or Michael Buble? Or is this a case where it will be the only music in the whole universe that will survive? Because if that is the case, then I would bring something a little more sophisticated. Maybe some Mozart (if I can bring the score with me, because that stuff is fun to play), or Pictures at an Exhobition by Mussorgsky (because it is also fun to play). I might also take some big band jazz music. Maybe some In the Mood by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Can I take entire musicals with me too? Or does that count as multiple songs. I would take Wicked, Rent, and maybe because it was fun to play. I might take Suesical the Musical just to start a fire (because it tends to get cold at night in the dessert).

What's a piece of music you associate with a parent, grandparent, or someone you know well that's at least a generation older than you.
-Maybe some classic rock for my dad, or some Glenn Miller for my grandparents (I'm not really sure what they really listened to, but it's a good guess).

If we all decided to replace the national anthem with a new song, and everyone agreed that you got to choose, what would you recommend?
-I would not change it. The idea of changing it to a "modern" song is insaine. The song would probably go out of style in a decade or two. You can't argue with a old English bar song put together with the first verse to a peom written about the war of 1812 and not established as the National Anthem untill the early 1900's.

What kinds of music related performance stuff (if any) do you do?
-Previously, too much... way too much. jazz band, choir, orchestra, pit orchestras, musicals, and marching band. Now, just choir.

Given the readings and what (little) you know about Governor Blanco, if you had a chance to ask her one question, what would it be?
-Umm... I don't know. What's it like to be a governor?
